Rep. Bradley Byrne held a town hall meeting at Atmore City Hall on Tuesday for his Better Off Now tour.
Byrne holds town hall meetings each year to get feedback from citizens in his district.
Many of the topics asked about or discussed at the meeting include:
• Trade — “China is doing a lot of things to hurt our economy, and other countries’ economies,” Byrne said. “I believe in a fair trading system.”
• The investigation about the collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia — Byrne said he hasn’t seen any evidence to indicate a collusion of any sort. “This has been going on for two years,” he said. “It’s time for him (Special Investigator Robert Mueller) to put all of the cards on the table.”
Byrne said the fact that Russia tried to infiltrate the campaign is something that needs looking into.
“I don’t think the threat of Russia is going away,” he said.
• Workforce Development — “We’re creating more jobs than have people to fill them,” he said.
Byrne said President Donald Trump signed the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which allows the federal government to send money to career technical programs.
“The jobs we are creating are requiring an elevation of skills and levels of education and skill to train people,” he said.
• Healthcare — Byrne spoke about the Medicare Wage Index, which affects rural hospitals in that some receive less money for the same services they offer, compared to other hospitals. He said he is working with American Hospital Association to put more pressure on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to change the wage index formula.
Some other topics Byrne talked about included tax breaks, opioid issue, IDEA and combating college debt.
