Looking Back: Winston Churchill came to Troy to speak

In 1973, 45 years ago, $1.6 million was appropriated for the county school system.
Six inmates escaped from the county jail using a wire from a broom to trip the lock. They were spotted by someone passing by who reported their escape to the deputies.
Old City Park was to be renovated.
There was an article in The Atmore Advance titled “That’s a Fact,” which stated the Starling bird is so determined to build a nest that it will pluck the wool right off the sheep to line it’s nest. I wonder how the sheep feels about it.
Randy Bolden was named “Teenager of the Month” by the Atmore Chamber of Commerce. Ollie Strawbridge presented him with a plaque.
I believe that a different student was chosen each month, but this is the first one that I noticed.
Readers were advising residents to subscribe to The Atmore Advance as the price was going to rise to $6.30 for a year’s subscription.
It sounds like a good bargain to me.
Atmore’s mayor, Oris Davis filed a petition against city councilman, Ben Haley. He stated that the reason for the petition was that Haley should not be holding a place on the council because he owned a business regulated by the council. I guess it was a conflict of interest. Haley replied that everyone knew of his business before he was elected.
Sir Winston Churchill was coming to Troy University to speak.
I realized that this must have been the son of “the first Sir Winston.”
In my reading I have read of the ancestors of Churchill and how they were connected to the royals. It is an interesting story.
“Slither” was showing at The Strand Theatre. I wonder what that was all about. I don’t think I would want to watch a movie with that name. It probably was full of snakes and, as you may know, I hate snakes. I hate live snakes, dead snakes, big snakes, little snakes and even sticks that look like snakes.
