Williams Station Day was fun, exciting

As the brisk cool morning air hit my face Saturday, it truly felt like fall.

Last weekend, the city of Atmore celebrated its namesake at Williams Station Day.

This was my fourth WSD, and they seem to get better with each passing year.

And with the festival comes a long day for a newspaper reporter such as myself.

Luckily, I spent most of the morning walking around with fellow photographer Ditto Gorme. I enjoyed his company as we took individual shots of the action that surrounded us.

Williams Station Day was unique this year because we got the chance to honor a descendant of William Williams. William Goff was given the key to the city in a ceremony that morning.

Goff was surrounded by family members for the occasion and that was pretty cool to see.

As I made my way up and down Pensacola Avenue, I tried to think about the crowd sizes during previous festivals.

Last year, the crowd was OK despite the cold and rainy mess that greeted visitors. Two years ago, I remember the crowd being large late in the morning, and tapering off in the afternoon, much like this year.

My first year at WSD, I did take note that it birthed a lot of vendors and area residents alike.

The day, for me, ended with a quick trip to Daphne, a short nap and Dirty 30 Southern Heat Wrestling’s second show, which featured WWE Hall of Famer Robert Gibson, of the well-known Rock ‘N’ Roll Express tag team.

Yeah, to put a bow on it, it was a good day on Saturday.

As with many things, I’m always looking forward to next year.
