TROY — Autauga Academy beat Escambia Academy 49-0 Friday night to win the Alabama Independent School Association’s Class 2A State Championship at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

AA led 20-0 after the first quarter, and 28-0 at halftime. The Generals led 42-0 going into the fourth quarter in a game that was the largest margin of victory for an AISA team in the state championship.

“They had a good football team,” EA head football coach Hugh Fountain said. “We made a lot of mistakes in this game. We came out and shot ourselves in the foot a lot.

“To the victor goes the spoils,” he said. “They beat us, and there’s really not much to say. They just outplayed us. We had moments, but those moments didn’t really develop into big play moments. Those moments don’t bleed into winning in a game like this.”

For EA, this game marks the third straight trip to the state championship for the current seniors.

Fountain said that’s quite a feat, adding that this year’s team was young and maybe they can come back next year.

“Give them (Autauga Academy) credit,” he said. “They outplayed us and beat us in the ball game. Sometimes that’s the way it is with sports.”

EA finished its season 10-3.
