Fifty years ago, in 1973, Debbie Davis was crowned the 1973 Homecoming Queen at Ernest Ward High School.

The Atmore Police Department was following some leads on a series of robberies and burglaries. Several stores had been robbed and there had been several people to be beat up during these robberies.

West Brothers, which was also in the Adams Shopping Center, had men’s fancy knit slacks for $8.87 and women’s polyester slacks for $5.

Now I have to tell you about those slacks. They were the ugliest things and I can’t believe that people wore them and went out in public. Not only were they made out of polyester knit, they were all colors including plaid. The men’s pants were even bell-bottomed. I do remember my husband having some plaid pants, but I don’t remember the bell-bottoms. Another thing I noticed was the shoes that men were expected to wear. My husband did have a pair of shoes that had stacked heels and were just awful. One of his friends teased him about those shoes until he got to where he wouldn’t even wear them. That makes me remember a shirt he had when we got married. It was wool flannel and I had to be careful when I washed it. One day it just accidentally disappeared and my husband looked for it everywhere. Of course he never found it because it was in the garbage.

Women’s clothing was no better. West Brothers also had slacks for women for $5. They also were terrible with wide legs and cuffs on the bottom of the legs. Long dresses were in and they could be had for $16.99. Remember panty hose? They were 37 cents a pair.

Piggly Wiggly had toilet tissue for 19 cents and clorox for 18 cents for a half gallon.

The drama class of Escambia County High School was to present “You Were Born on a Rotten Day,” a comedy.

Lastly, The Atmore Advance had an Open House to show off their new facilities on South Main Street. It was estimated that more than 500 people came to see the new building.

Fourteen young ladies signed up to participate in the Escambia County Jr. Miss contest.
