Sean Marshall’s appointment with a Birmingham-Southern College track and field coach wasn’t supposed to start until 1 p.m. last Monday.

The Escambia County senior was on the private college’s campus at 9 a.m.

Marshall’s dedication to his sport and athleticism landed him a scholarship to BSC, where he signed to play recently.

“They made me feel like I was at home, and where I needed to be,” Marshall said about his decision to sign with BSC. “They made me feel like Birmingham is Atmore, and they made me feel like I wasn’t on the outside.”

Marshall said the campus is big, and all made him feel right at home.

The latest signing at ECHS is one of many as of late, and it’s a good problem to have, athletic director Scott Mason said.

“The scholarships are available,” Mason said. “This kid, Sean Marshall, with his situation, he worked for it. He’s more capable and more than willing, but again the scholarships are there. You’ve got to keep throwing the mud, and call these coaches. You’ve got to call them and say we’ve got a kid down here that can help your program.”

Mason added that at some point down the road he wants people to realize that there are athletes at ECHS, too.

Marshall is the son of Wykesha Sharp of Atmore.
