Escambia Academy dominates 1st half, defeats Jay, Fla. 38-21

Escambia Academy put together a solid first half and rolled to a 38-21 victory over Jay, Fla. Friday night on the road.

The Cougars led 28-7 late in the first half, thanks to a 22-yard scoring rush from Daughtry McGhee and a 73-yard kick off return from Shannon Wheat in the first quarter; a 4-yard touchdown rush from Jabo Davis in the second; and a 55-yard scamper from quarterback Landon Sims with 6:39 left until the break.

“The first half was the story of the game,” EA head football coach Hugh Fountain said. “Everything we did was decided in the first half. We scored on the first possession of the second half on the third play.”
Fountain said the game gave everybody some playing time.

The Cougars improve to 2-2 on the season, and host Patrician Academy next Friday.

Northview 34, Holmes County 22

Northview running back Trent Peebles rushed for more than 200 yards and scored four touchdowns, and Jayden Jackson added one touchdown to help lead the Chiefs in a road victory on Friday.

Before halftime, the Chiefs led 14-0, and HCHS scored late to cut the lead to one score at the break.

After a tough loss last week against rival Baker, Fla., Chiefs head football coach Derek Marshman said he was proud of the resilience the players showed. He said everybody got to play, and it’s always good to win a football game.

NHS improves to 2-2 overall, and hosts Robertsdale next week.

Bayside Academy 30, T.R. Miller 29

Bayside Academy’s Jacob Cunningham threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to James Jones with 19 seconds remaining to edge the Tigers in Brewton on Friday.

The Tigers led with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter after quarterback Blake Jernigan connected with Darius Webb on an 80-yard pass. The 2-point conversion failed, and then the Admirals went on their game-winning drive.

Webb finished with 2 receptions for 100 yards; and Narkavis Campbell rushed for 97 yards on seven carries to lead TRM.

Cunningham rushed for 83 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground, and went 12-for-21 for 166 yards and on score in the air.

Matt Morgan hit a 32-yard field goal with more than 7 minutes left in the third quarter.
