After more than 29 years in Atmore, Country Charms has closed its doors.

Owners Joe and Rachel Brown said the reason why the store is closing is because the couple is retiring.

Country Charms opened in September 1990 as a gift shop.

Joe Brown said the store evolved into a picture framing and engraving shop.

“People have been good to us,” he said about why the store has been open for so long. “Customers have been good to us.”

Rachel Brown said another reason why the store has been open so long is because of the great employees.

“We had dedicated and loyal employees,” she said.

Joe Brown said they are planning on traveling via cruise all over the world.

Before, coming to Atmore, the Browns owned a wholesale floral shop in Atlanta, Ga.

“We moved here to semi-retire,” he quipped.

Brown said before the store expanded, it wasn’t as big as it is in present day.

Brown said it’s a bitter sweet moment to say goodbye to the store after all these years.

“It’s been our kid for 29 years,” he said with a smile. “We’ve met some wonderful friends and acquaintances. We love this city.”
