Northwest Escambia’s freshmen and junior football and all cheer teams are competing in the 2019 Mercedes Benz Redzone Games this Sunday at Atlanta Falcons Stadium.

ERC League President Greg Gibson said the games are 2 minutes in length and teams begin play on the 10-yard line. The first offense plays against the first defense, and the second offense plays against the second defense. The cheerleaders perform at the 50-yard line between games.

Gibson said the object is to score as many times as possible in the 2-minute window. During the week, the freshmen and juniors practiced their organization prior to this weekend’s games.

Gibson said he learned about the opportunity through an email.

“I guess somebody looked at us (via our website),” he said. “It’s a great opportunity. It’s something they’ll never forget.”

Gibson said event organizers cater the competition around the spirit of celebrating football.

The freshmen and juniors won their respective ERC championships this past season, and both are undefeated on the season. The freshmen recently competed and won the Turkey Bowl Championship.

“We’re just trying to be the best we can be and give them the experience they can get,” Gibson said. “We aren’t afraid of competition. We’ll play anybody.

“It’s a great opportunity,” he said. “We look forward to competing, and we’re hoping the kids will make football memories that’ll last a lifetime.”
