UPDATE: The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced Friday (Jan. 31) that the passenger in the Chevrolet Impala, Bessie lee Murphy, 65, of Beatrice, died from her injuries sustained in the crash.

A Monroeville man died and an Atmore man was injured in a four-vehicle wreck on Thursday night on Highway 21 between Fountain Correctional Facility and the Interstate 65 interchange, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Lt. Joe Piggott said in a release that Demetrick Stallworth, 39, of Monroeville, was traveling south on Highway 21 when his 2019 Acura TLX collided head on with a 2019 Ford F-150, which was driving by Spencer Rogers, 36, of Atmore.

Piggott said also involved in the crash was a 2015 Chevrolet Impala driven by Sherry Ann Dale, 60, of Frisco City and a 2008 Dodge Ram driven by Sharon Banks, 53, of Monroeville.

“Rogers, Dale, Banks, and two others were transported for treatment of injuries,” he said. “Stallworth, who was not using a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.”

Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputies blocked Highway 21 off from the interstate interchange and just passed Fountain.

Nothing further is available as troopers continue to investigate.

Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff Heath Jackson released a statement earlier this week in regard to the crash.

Jackson said in the statement that a county investigator was traveling on Highway 21 in an unmarked car.

“The investigator was passed by a 2019 Acura that was traveling in excess of 100 miles an hour, and the investigator was ran off the road along with several other vehicles,” Jackson said. “The investigator activated his lights and siren and attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but was unable to. It is not known if the driver of the Acura knew that law enforcement was behind him.

“A few miles down the road near Ross Road, the investigator came upon a crash that involved the 2019 Acura and numerous other vehicles,” he said.
