Looking Back: 30 years ago, Christmas aided the city

Thirty years ago, in 1990, businessmen in Atmore still had Christmas on their minds. The City of Atmore reported that they had a strong Christmas according to the city tax receipts.
Jury members were still being interviewed by the two sides for the Edward Dubose trial.
There was a special page in The Brewton Standard devoted to valentines. This was in the form of hearts with children in the middle of the hearts.
The trial of Edward Russell Dubose began and his attorney, Richard Alexander, said his client was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He said that Dubose was seen in the area because he was looking for a drug deal at the time Stephanie King was kidnapped and murdered. The prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney, Reo Kirkland, made his case that DNA placed Dubose at the scene of the crime.
In another article, it was announced that security had been beefed up for the trial. Extra deputies were stationed at the entrances of the courthouse and a metal detector was installed.
Doug Godwin was giving flying lessons to his son, Mike, when the plane crashed near the Atmore Airport. Darrel Ledkins, an investigator from the Atmore Police Department said the pilot did a good job handling the plane.
A frequent topic of conversation for both Atmore and the county was the problem of landfills. It seems it was too costly for both of them.
Cathy A. Jones was named the new Secretary of the Atmore Chamber of Commerce.
Century Hoapital reopened as an out-patient clinic. It was to be affiliated with the Unversity Hospital in Penscola, Fla. Some officials hoped that it will become a hospital again in the near future.
The Atmore Advance printed tips for attracting more purple martins to this area to live up to the city’s new name.
Mayor Howard Shell signed a proclamation declaring Feb. 18-24 to be Arbor Day.
Junior offensive lineman, Greg Hooper, was selected on Ernest Ward’s 1989-1990 Challenger Award winner.
A woman claimed her child had been abused at school when she got a paddling.
