Thirty years ago, in 1990, an Atmore man, John Lewis Craft, was arrested after racing through a roadblock and narrowly missing two officers, according to Sheriff Tim Hawsey. The truck that Craft was driving was spotted on I-65 going about 100 miles per hour. An Escambia County deputy began pursuit and were joined by two Atmore police units. The truck slowed down near the Atmore exit at Highway 21 and law enforcement thought he was stopping. Instead, Craft sped up Highway 21 just missing hitting the police officers. The officers began to fire their guns at the truck as it raced toward them. Several bullets were fired and one hit and injured Craft. A package, that the police thought was marijuana, was thrown from the truck before Craft and his truck came to a stop.

A later newspaper said that the Alabama Bureau of Investigation had begun looking into the shooting.
