Two juveniles were arrested in connection with making threats on social media to cause harm at Escambia County Middle School, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Heath Jackson said in a release that on Feb. 26, 2020, ECSO investigators, along with Atmore Police investigators, began in investigation into the threats.

On Feb. 26, the Escambia County Schools System posted a release on its Facebook page, saying that the ECSO and APD were investigating and will continue to investigate until they find the responsible parties.

“Law enforcement from the Atmore Police Department and Escambia County Sheriff’s Office will be on site at the school (ECMS) tomorrow (Feb. 27) to provide security and support,” the post said. “In addition, school personnel will have additional security measures in place. Ensuring the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority and we will continue close communication with local law enforecement.”

Jackson said in a release that during the investigation, two juveniles were identified as suspects and one was taken into custody on the (Feb.) 26th and the other was arrested on the (Feb.) 28th.

“All emergency protocols were activated and due to efforts by school staff, administrators, parents and law enforcement, we were able to insure that no child was placed in a dangerous situation and we were able to maintain the goal of educating our children in a safe environment,” he said. “We would like to ask the parents in the community to monitor their children’s social media platforms and remind them that threats are not something to joke about.”

The names of the juveniles weren’t released, according to state law.
