Ivey announces all K-12 schools to close after Wednesday

All K-12 schools in Alabama will close at the end of Wednesday, March 18.
Gov. Kay Ivey announced the decision during a press conference held on Friday afternoon. The closure is in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Schools could potentially re-open on April 6. This decision will be made at that time.
“That gives parents three days to be thinking about child care,” Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey said.
Currently there are 5 confirmed cases throughout the state. The announcement came shortly after President Trump declared a national state of emergency.
According to Mackey, all athletic events will be canceled as well during the period that schools are closed.
Escambia Academy extended its spring break holiday until March 30 because of the pandemic.
Additionally, all school activities, including field trips and athletic events have been postponed until April 6 for AISA schools.
Headmaster Hugh Fountain said in a Facebook post that the school will be disinfected, and students will be educated on the virus if the closings happen after March 30.
Fountain said the school made the decision to allow families good time to construct a plan to provide care for their children.
The Escambia County School District (Fla.) also extended its spring break by one week.
