Pride of Atmore officials announced recently that the Strand Theatre and Old Hardware Store have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.

The designation allows the local organization to apply for both state and federal historic tax credits, which will help aid in the restoration and renovation project, which is ongoing.

“This has not been an easy job,” Pride of Atmore Executive Director Foster Kizer said in an email. “Getting this designation takes a lot of time, resources, photos, history and foot work. Koodos to the Pride of Atmore team. 

“Once we receive notice of our obtaining historic tax credits we will be able to continue with the actual restoration of the theatre and hardware store,” he said.

Kizer said the target date for completion is spring 2021, which is the theatre’s 100th birthday.

“That will be one fantastic birthday party,” he said. “All of Atmore will be invited to celebrate with the Pride of Atmore.”

Kizer said the organization has been successful in its fundraising campaigns, but is still short of its target figure.

“We will gladly accept donations no matter how large or small,” he said. “Please help us continue our efforts by donating.”
