Thirty years ago, in 1990, a local couple was charged in a marijuana find.

A desk attendant who was abducted from the Brewton Motor Inn, escaped from her abductors in Mississippi. Marie Burnett, 55, was able to get away from Damsey Alexander Bruner, 30, and John Fred Woolard, 28, when they stopped at a motel in Mississippi. Burnett said two men came into the Brewton Motor Inn about 4 a.m. and wanted to rent a room. They returned to their truck to get ID. They came back into the motel and took her at gunpoint back out to the truck and threw her onto the floor of the vehicle. She was held for 27 hours before her escape. It came out that the men were escapees from a prison in Florida. They were being held on several additional charges including murder of a police officer in Mississippi.
Atmore officials were to meet with Amtrak officials about the possibilities of the company building a Y in downtown.

CSX agreed to clean up the groundwater that was contaminated in a train wreck and explosion 25 years ago on May 17, 1965, (This would have made it 55 years ago in 2020). The amount to be paid back over a five-year period was $684,000.

The CSX plan for putting a Y in downtown Atmore was not met with complete joy. Some residents welcomed the move, but some residents said it should be put at another site. CSX said the move would be too expensive. Another meeting was held and the railroad decided to go ahead with its plans.
