Driving about over the weekend, one couldn’t help but notice the progress that’s being made on the downtown beautification project by First National Bank and Trust.

FNBT announced Feb. 20 the improvements to the property on Main Street, which is adjacent to the bank’s main office.

According to Atmore Advance archives, the renovations will enhance the look of downtown and add to the revitalization of Atmore.

Additionally, landscaping is being added to bring additional color and plant life along the side of the building. New street lights, sidewalks and park space will improve the appearance of South Main Street. The remaining buildings will feature murals that depict all that is Atmore. The projected completion of the improvements is forecasted to be the middle of the summer.

At present, a walkway has been paved and lights have been erected on the new space.

This is one of many projects ongoing in downtown, including the renovations to the Strand Theatre and the Old Hardware Store next door.

As I like to think of it, Atmore is going through a so-called renaissance of sorts.

There is a lot of interest in the vitality of downtown, and what this means moving forward.

Recently, Atmore was named as a designated city by Main Street, which is a big deal. The designation will go a long way to help the city grow.

These few projects are bringing some excitement to the city, and I can’t wait to see the rest.
