Thirty years ago, in 1990. convicted killer Wallace Norrell Thomas became the 161st inmate to die in Alabama’s electric chair in Atmore.

The hunt for a murder sspect ended when the body of Bobby Ray Stewart was found in a local
motel. Stewart was a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife and her husband in Bay Minette, According to authorities, Stewart broke into the couple’s home and shot, at close range, Robert Wayne Merritt and his wife, Patricia Merritt. The suspect’s car was spotted in Atmore at the Southland Motel. When police broke into the room, Stewart’s body was found inside where he apparently killed himself.
A Brewton woman, Sherry Thompson, 25, was found dead in a room at the Colonial Manor. The maid came to clean the room and found her “sleeping,” The next day the maid came back and she noticed the woman lying in the same position. The Escambia County coroner, Joe Petty, said “ it appeared to be of natural causes.
A two-car wreck on South Main Street involving two Atmore residents, resulted in one injury and caused traffic problems.
