An inmate was found unresponsive during a cell check on July 23 at the Escambia County Detention Center, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Heath Jackson said in a release that the cell check was being performed by jail staff at the center.

“The elderly inmate was pronounced deceased at the scene from what appeared to be natural causes,” Jackson said. “As normal protocol for all in custody deaths, ALEA (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) agents with the (Alabama) State Bureau of Investigations are conducting the investigation.”
