Unity in the Community officials said the annual event at Grace Fellowship Church on July 25 went well.

Event Coordinator Ruth Robinson said more than 30 volunteers from Grace Fellowship, Empowerment Tabernacle and Concerned Citizens of Atmore helped in the effort.

“Despite a rainy day, we were able to hand out school supplies and uniforms to 87 families, totaling 196 children,” Robinson said. “We were very pleased with the number of students we were able to provide for, considering a large percentage of students are opting to attend school virtually at the beginning of this school year due to COVID-19 and they won’t be needing uniforms and/or supplies.”

Because of the pandemic, the annual Unity in the Community festival was held via drive through.

Robinson said a lot contributed to the event.

“We greatly appreciate all those who contributed to the event through participating in the fundraiser held by the hospital, various grants and monies such as the United Fund (of Atmore), Southern Pine Electric Co-op and more,” she said. “It takes the whole community to make this event happen.
“We are grateful that Atmore is willing to work together to help the kids in our community and give them a great start to their school year,” she said.
