Looking Back: 30 years ago, state approved I-65 exit

Thirty years ago, in 1990, the state approved a plan for an I-65 exit at Jack Springs Road, making the industrial park more assessable.
A Flomaton resident led the police on a merry chase after stealing a log truck. Eddie Lane Peak, 19, who was charged with several offenses, was finally stopped at Adams Plaza.
An Atmore man, Lamar Strickler, was one of two killed when their experimental plane crashed in Wisconsin.
A Holman Prison inmate was stabbed to death by another inmate.
Football coach, Jack Akins, returned to Escambia County High School after a 12 year absence. He last was the coach there in 1978 and had a record of 9-2.
There was a large section in The Atmore Advance about what Atmore is like to live in. This was done to introduce the public to the new slogan, “Old Friends, New Beginnings.”
Murder suspect, David Thomas Leitner, declined an appointed lawyer and named one of his own from Huntsville, Mark McDaniel.
A strong wind blew down a tree onto Snappy Laundry. Nobody was hurt but employees and customers were very frightened. The roof of the building and a customer’s car suffered hits.
Young Woman of the Year contestants were Kaylyn Phiferi, Kim Cotten, Chrisie Taylor, Wendi Goolsby, Kim Gibson, Laurie Strawbridge, Shea Raines, Kasie O’Neal, Nicole Brown, Heidi Sasser, Greer Thomas, Kelly Stallworth and Krystal Pate. Kelly Stallworth, a senior at T.R. Miller High School, won the contest for 1991.
