Thirty years ago, in 1990, four Atmore swimmers returned from St. Petersburg, Fla. with awards. They were Deborah Bilb, Kelly Gurred, Mandy Moore and Ann McGhee.
James R. Mooney pled guilty of sexual miscondmuct. He had been charged with sodomy of a male student. You may remember that Mooney was a school teacher in the Escambia County, Ala. school system. The judge gave a sentence of suspension and a year of probation.
Workers with the Muscular Dystrophy Association were asking for volunteers to work the telephones for the upcoming telethon.
A drenching rain in Atmore might be enough to save the crops which have been needing rain.
Today, as I write this, we are watching the weather reports coming in about, not one, but two hurricanes are brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Marco and Tropical Storm Laura are both expected to cause some rain and flooding in our area. All of this just reminded me of another hurricane that had a bigger impact on us. Ivan roared in here in September of 2004 and was the focus for all of us for a while.
At the time, I was still covering news stories at the time and we lost power fairly early. It was the day before print for us and we had to work. Lucky for us, we were able to set up a temporary office in the city hall and got our paper out the next day. (This was in Brewton for The Brewton Standard). I saw things that I will never forget and I am so thankful that these two current storms seem to be headed somewhere else.
