There’s a lot happening in and around the Atmore area.

Last week, the city of Atmore played host to a resource team with Main Street Alabama.

The team spent three days here, going around and coming up with ideas and suggestions on how to make the downtown area even more better.

Last Thurs., Sept. 3, the team presented its findings and suggestions, and we believe residents left the meeting excited.

Pasted around the exit of the city hall auditorium were blank pieces of paper, where people could sign up to help with promotion, design, economic and other aspects.

People were signing up enthusiastically to help with this effort, and it was good to see.

Other news that came out last week was Gov. Kay Ivey’s announcement about the proposed land in the Bell Ford Road area for one of the new three megaprisons.

This news, from the governor’s prison initiative, came out of nowhere.

People told us the announcement wasn’t even hinted at before it became public.

And a lot have been concerned about the location of the prison.

In fact, the prison will be located about a mile off of Bell Ford Road in an area that’s shrouded by trees, according to officials.

The most positive aspect of this piece of news are the jobs that it’ll benefit, from construction to the prison staff.

This means added revenue for the city, and it also means helping the quality of life for many.

Last week was full of positive news for the area and city, and here’s hoping it doesn’t let up.
