Hurricane Sally is now forecast to make landfall on the coast of Mississippi Tuesday evening, according to Escambia County EMA officials.

Director David Adams said the forward movement is very slow and they are having some difficulty forecasting the exact timing on the northerly turn. 

“This could mean more severe impacts for Escambia County Ala.,” Adams said. “Currently the forecast for Escambia County calls for gusty winds, some tropical storm force (39 mph or higher) and heavy rainfall. Rainfall between 4-6 inches in the far eastern end of the county to 8-10 inches in the western end of the county is forecasted. Some areas may see higher amounts.”

Adams said if you must travel, please be very vigilant of conditions and do not drive through water covering roadways or bridges. 

Drivers cannot tell if the road or bridge is intact under the water, he said.

A vehicle can be swept of the road in as little as 6 inches of water, Adams said.

In Atmore, the fire department is handing out bags to be filled with sand. The sand is located across the street from city hall at the Farmer’s Market.
