Escambia County EMA Director David Adams said today that Hurricane Sally was approximately 87 miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay and moving northwest at 2 miles per hour (mph).

Adams said current sustained winds were at 85 mph.

“Current projections have landfall occurring early Wednesday morning in south Mobile County,” Adams said. “The slow forward speed will allow Sally to bring substantial amounts of gulf moisture into the area. This is shaping up to be a significant rainfall and flooding event.”

Adams said the River Forecast Center released creek level projections for Murder Creek in Brewton.

“The current projection is for Murder Creek to crest Thursday morning, tomorrow, Sept. 17, at 26.4 feet,” he said. “The minor flood stage is 22 feet. If this prediction holds, water should cover Highway 41. Please prepare accordingly.”

Adams said officials don’t plan on closing a road or bridge.

“The decision is made as conditions warrant for public safety,” he said. “When it becomes unsafe to travel a roadway or bridge it will be deemed closed.”
