There were a couple of firsts for Northview Friday night.

The Chiefs defeated Holmes County 39-6 to win their season opener, and first-year head football coach Wes Summerford got his first win in the leading position on the team.

“Exciting,” Summerford said about the win and the chance to play. “This is exciting for a first win as a head coach. I’m excited for our kids. It’s been a long time coming.”

Summerford said the kids handled the delayed season due to the pandemic well.

“I can’t tell you how many times these kids have been put off,” he said, adding that on Monday he wasn’t sure if this week’s game was going to happen. “I just told them to be optomistic.”

Late in the third quarter, the Chiefs led 19-0. Jayden Jackson scored on a run late in the same period to put his team up for good.

Early in the first, Holmes County scored on a 3-yard dash.

Northview’s Logan Bryan added a 67-yard touchdown run a short time later, and Jackson converted the 2-point conversion to put the Chiefs ahead 33-6.

Kaden Odom added a 8-yard touchdown run with 5:42 to play.

Summerford said for 17-to-18-year-olds, his players kept fighting every day in the lead up to the season.

“They played a good game,” he said. “I saw some good stuff. We’ve got to get better for sure. We’ve got some tough games down the road.”

Next week, the Chiefs visit Escambia Academy (Ala.) in Canoe.

Kick off is at 7 p.m.
