Thirty years ago, in 1990, Greenlawn Hospital became Atmore Community Hospital. Years before, when the hospital was first built, it was in the Greenlawn subdivision, but it was believed a new name would reflect on the fact that it was a big part of the community.
First National Bank held its annual fish fry for the community and drew some 1800 people for the event.
Swift Lumber Inc. was showing a display slice of a 950-year-old Redwood tree. It was believed that the tree was around 190 feet tall.
I told you about the national guard and our trip to Cafifornia when the Russians built the Berlin Wall. We decided that it would probably be the only chance we would to see the state, so every weekend we went somewhere different.
One of those weekends was my birthday and I got to pick the place I wanted to go, which was to go to Sequoia National Park and off we went. I was the navigator and we had to drive through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I got us on the wrong side of the mountains and our trip turned to Yosemite National Park. This is some of the most beautiful country in the world and I will never forget our time out there and I would go again in a minute.
My reason for telling you this is because of this entry of the slice of a Redwood tree shown at Swift. On that trip that weekend, we saw some of the oldest and biggest trees I ever hope to see. There was one Sequoia tree that was so large, you could drive a car through it. I understand the tree has since fallen to a terrible winter storm in California.
Sorry to give you another of my “stories” but to tell the truth, its what I have. At least I haven’t told you the story of the time I lived in the jailhouse. At least I don’t think I have. More next week.
