Have you ever written something and not be satisfied with what you wrote?

This realization occured to this writer last Friday night during Escambia Academy’s AISA Class 2A state semifinal game against Macon-East.

“I’d rather write about this team,” I thought.

As I walked the sideline at the Canoe School, I couldn’t help but be impressed with what I was seeing.

The Cougars went on to defeat the Knights 54-13 to earn their fifth-straight championship game appearance. No. 2 EA faces No. 6 Chambers Academy at 3:30 p.m. this Fri., Nov. 20, at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.

The AISA’s championship games are usually played at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Troy University, but that changed this year because of the pandemic. From what I’ve been told, it takes some two hours after each game to sanitize and clean the stadium.

That does make sense and I completely understand. But, back to EA.

The Cougars are riding a nine-game winning streak with their last loss on Aug. 28, a 24-22 decision to top-ranked and still undefeat Glenwood.

From then on, EA has battled this season, namely in games against Tuscaloosa Academy and Northview, Fla.

But, what impressed me was EA’s road win against Bessemer Academy.

Being that I couldn’t make the game due to other high school football action, I made sure to follow along on the school’s Facebook page.

I got lucky because the school, which usually broadcasts its games on its page, had technical difficulties.

Throughout the game, updates started pouring in and pretty soon I rezlied that the Cougars were going to win the game.

“What do I ask (EA head football) coach (Hugh) Fountain about the game?” I asked myself.

As I made my way back from covering Escambia County’s game against Flomaton, I called Fountain.

“Sounds like it was a complete game win,” I said.

Fountain then gave me some good answers and I went on with my night.

After demolishing their opponents in the first round and the semifinals, the Cougars are back in familiar territory.

I know the coaching staff has put in a good game plan for Chambers. Vice versa.

This is going to be a good game, and I’m looking forward to reporting on the contest.
