Atmore City Councilwoman Eunice Johnson said Monday night that something must be done to prevent the loss of anymore young people.

Johnson addressed the council and the public during the meeting, saying that in her district (3), they have several areas where a lot of gatherings are taking place.

“This is directed to you, (Atmore Police) Chief (Chuck) Brooks,” Johnson said. “In District 3, we have several areas where a lot of gatherings are going on. On Maxwell and Gray Streets, we’re continuing having drive-by shootings.

“The last one happened after Thanksgiving Day,” she said. “It’s horrible.”

Johnson was referring to the 17 year old who was shot the day after Thanksgiving. Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said the department continues to investigate the whereabouts of the homicide suspect, Rodarious T. Dailey, 22, of Atmore.

Johnson addressed most of her comments toward Brooks. She requested the APD patrol the area more, and added the safety of “our commuinty should be the first and foremost.”

Johnson also asked the patrols be sent on Montgomery Street as well as many people tend to park there.

“If you can patrol that area more often, we’d appreciate it,” she said. “The community is really complaining about that.

“We must do something to help our young people,” she said. “Atmore is in a chaos now. Patterson Street… we know the streets. Patterson, Maxwell and Gray Street.”

Johnson also requested a street light be placed at Maxwell and Gray Streets to deter the gatherings. Mayor Jim Staff said he’d get a light out there.

In other business, the council:

• heard from Bill Salter Advertising’s Chuck Riley, who addressed the council about the reconstruction of one broken billboard on Highway 31 north and Sixth Avenue that was damaged during Hurricane Sally. Riley said the construction would take more than a day, and would conform to state law. The city council didn’t take action, and is mulling the decision;

• Johnson said Shaun Rounsavall, owner of 30 Below Icecream, would like for the drains to be repaired on the side of the former You’re My Star Boutique building, next to the post office. She said Rounsavall requested the pot holes be repaired behind the building by the post office.

• adopted resolution 2020-33, authorizing the city to purchase two vehicles from the Alabama Department of Transportation Surplus Property Division.
