Tomorrow, the moment a lot of people have been waiting for will commence.

New Year’s Day will strike at midnight, Jan. 1, 2021, beginning a new year for all and ending a year quite a lot of folks want to forget.

Yes, 2020 didn’t live up to its hype as the COVID-19 pandemic took control of everything, causing widespread depression, anxiety and other not-so-fun things.

But, when you think about 2020, try and think about the positives that came from it.

One, we all got the chance to slow down. To help mitigate the spread of the virus, a lot of people got the chance to work from home and thereby spend more time with their families.

Two, we adjusted. Because the pandemic caused massive closures and cancelations of events, we made do with what we had and thrived.

Three, things started looking up in the fall. With the advent of another football season, both high school and college, we all took a deep breath and progressed into a unique and different season with its ups and downs, and even cancelations.

Four, despite going through two hurricanes, the Atmore community as a whole came back with a fury.

And five, the community gathered for a peace march in June soon after the death of George Floyd sparked nationwide protests. The march was peaceful and needed.

And six, a COVID-19 vaccine.

Those are just a few of the many things that we can look back on and take as positives.

So, as you chow down on your black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day, think back on the year of 2020.

Think about the negatives, but don’t forget the positives.
