DAR Good Citizens named

Three Escambia County, Ala. high school students have been named DAR Good Citizens by the Fort Mims Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

The DAR Good Citizens for 2020-21 are Daughtry McGhee of Escambia Academy; Breanna McGowan of Escambia County High School; and Karli Alaniz of Flomaton High School.

The students were selected from the senior class of each school based on qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree, according to officials.

The DAR Good Citizens were eligible to participate in the National DAR Scholarship Contest, which included background information in school and community and an essay.

McGhee, McGowan and Alaniz completed the scholarship portion.

Additionally, one chapter winner’s package from each could be selected to advance to district to compete with entries from Baldwin and Mobile counties, according to a release.

The district winner will advance to the state competition, and the state winner goes to the national competition.

Alaniz was named the NSDAR winner.

The recognition of the winner will be given at awards day or senior recognition day at the end of the school year.

Recognition will be made by press release in area newspapers and awards will be mailed to recipients in case COVID-19 prevents group gatherings.
