Thirty years ago in 1991, the issue of vacation pay was on the minds of those in the Atmore City Council. The issue was the topic of the most recent meeting of the council.

An inmate in the Atmore City jail hanged himself by tying a sheet to the upper bunk in the cell. He was found when the deputy was delivering the food trays.

A woman died in the Springhill community of East Brewton of a stabbing. Barbara Brazille, 28, died of wounds to the chest and throat. The victim’s stepfather was also stabbed, but the wounds were not life threatening. Escambia County deputy, Don Grant, said at the time that the victim’s boyfriend, Davies Sanders, turned himself in to authorities shortly after the incident. The suspect’s mother showed up from a shopping trip and collapsed when she was told what had happened.

Wayne Roderick Burkett, 30, died of a shotgun blast and his wife, Sharon J. Burkett, was charged with the shooting, thought to be the result of domestic situation.

There was a lot of discussion about the consolidation of Jefferson Davis College and Atmore State Technical College.

Atmore was recognized to be a Tree City and a Tree City flag was accepted  by Mayor Howard Shell and Eulay Wise.

Foodfair had two liter Cokes for 89 cents, baking hens for 68 cents a pound and Hamilton ham for 98 cents a pound.

Thomas William Gerlach and Karen Michele Cox chose April 30, 1991 for  their wedding date. The ceremony was held at First United Methodist Church in Atmore. I include this announcement because most of you know this couple. Tommy ran a very successful restaurant in Atmore and Michele was the publisher of The Atmore Advance.

Lastly, there was an editorial expressing the opinion of the editor about the raise of the county commission’s salary.
