Some 30 acres of brush and woodland burned in a wild fire this afternoon behind a residence off Highway 31 near the Baldwin County line, according to the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighter Tristan Gehman said at approximately 1 p.m. today, the NVFD responded to the wild fire, and five departments worked the incedent, including NVFD, Atmore Fire Department, Perdido Volunteer Fire Department, Rabun Volunteer Fire Department and the Alabama Forestry Serfvice.

“Gusty and changing winds, and rough and wooded terrain made it challenging to control the blaze,” Gehman said.

Gehman said the fire was eventually contained using water-equipped ATVs and all-terrain trucks, as well as on foot.

“An Alabama forestry bulldozer plowed a fire line to prevent the blaze from spreading, and fire apparatus and crews were positioned to protect nearby residences,” he said.

Additionally, NVFD used a local drone pilot to provide aerial images to help survey the direction of the burn, Gehman said.

Gehman said some 30 acres were affected, and some continued smoldering is expected throughout the night.
