City approves excavator purchase

The Atmore City Council adopted a resolution to purchase an excavator to aid in landfill work at its regular meeting on April 12.

The excavator cost $10,000 and is used, Mayor Jim Staff said.

Staff said if the excavator breaks down, the city can use it for scrap.

In other business, the council:

  • approved the appointment of Stephanie Rolin, Stephen Van Pelt and Miles Smith to the Atmore Industrial Development board, replacing Ricky Martin, Tommy Moore and Jim Johnson;
  • approved the reappointments of Richard Maxwell and Sheilo Faircloth to the industrial development board;
  • approved a Mental Health Awareness walk from the former Atmore Area YMCA building to Tomb Byrne Park on May 15, at 8 a.m. The walk will be held to bring awareness to mental health and stop the stigma of mental health treatment. Additionally, Staff read a proclamation declaring May 2021 as Mental Health Month in Atmore; and,
  • heard from a resident on Craig Street. The resident is a professional truck driver and was told by Staff that he couldn’t park his semi-trailer at his home. The resident asked where he could park, and Staff said he doesn’t know of a solution, however. The city council is going to look into the resident’s issue.
