Thirty years ago in 1991, golf lessons were to be offered at the Atmore YMCA. The teacher was to be Robbie Cotton from Brewton, the winner of many tournaments.

The Atmore Chamber of Commerce was looking for a new executive director.

The Atmore Advance was adding a new feature and calling it Maturity. It was to bring attention to the issues facing the senior population.

Escambia County had 11 murder cases pending.

In a column dated 50 years before, the May Festival was planned and a cake walk would be featured.

When I was young I attended a small country school by the name of Long Junior High in Dale County. In fact I knew Mr. Long very well. Anyway, every fall we had a harvest event. We had a cake walk and a box supper among other things. In the cakewalk an oval was marked off with numbers on the auditorium floor (sort of like hopscotch or musical chairs) and one advanced to music and stepped on the numbers. A number was called out and whoever was standing on that number got to pick a cake. This was in the days when every mother furnished a home-baked cake to the festival.

The other thing that drew a large crowd was the box supper auction. All the young ladies decorated a shoe box and filled it full of good old country cooking. Then the young men bid on the boxes according to how much they liked the girl. Some time the bids would get pretty high. The bad thing was that it was the custom for the couple to later share the food and sometime they might not be a couple.I know this is pretty tame for the kids today, but it worked back in the early 1950s.
