The Atmore City Council recognized May 10-14, 2021 as Small Business Week in the city during its most-recent meeting on May 10.

Mayor Jim Staff read and presented a proclamation to Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce representatives at the meeting.

In other business, the council:

• adopted resolution 2021-07, a multi-hazard mitigation plan, which allows the city to request aid from FEMA if it gets hit by a hurricane;

• adopted resolution 2021-09, an ATRIP II grant. The grant is an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to begin work at the intersection of Highway 21 and Poarch Road, where the new hospital will be located;

• adopted resolution 2021-10, an EDA grant engineering agreement with Civil Southeast LLC;

• approved the Juneteenth Celebration on June 19, 2021 at Houston Avery Park, from 4-9 p.m.;

• approved the Stop Da Violence hood bash for Houston Avery Park on June 19, from noon until 4 p.m.;

• approved a food drive to be held on June 24 at Tom Byrne Park, beginning at 9 a.m. Some 5,000 pounds of food will be distributed to those in need, according to Voices for Jesus Ministry’s Shirley Williams;

• heard from Salter Signs’ Chuck Riley regarding the street sign on Highway 31 and 6th Avenue. Riley requested that his company come in and replace the sign with a new one. However, because of City Ordinance 9.531, the sign is considered an existing non conforming sign, and changing or altering the sign, or replacing the support structure of the sign, shall be considered prolonging its useful life; and,

• approved the letting of bids for 30 tazers for the Atmore Police Department.
