The Escambia County Commission approved the appointment of a new member to the board of the Escambia County Cooperative Library System.

Commissioner Karean Reynolds nominated Ann Powell for the vacant position on the board with commissioners unanimously approving the appointment.

Commissioners also heard from a Flomaton area residents concerning the road conditions in his neighborhood.

Glen Johnson said the road conditions of Welka Road and Old Fannie Road have become a danger to the drivers who travel the roads.

“The road has gone past being rough to dangerous,” Johnson told commissioners. “And Hollywood Road in that area is breaking up and coming apart.”

Commissioner Scottie Stewart said he had been made aware of the road conditions and has been to the area to see the state of disrepair for himself.

“I’ve looked at it and it’s on my plan for repairs,” Stewart said. “The road from the railroad to 31 is terrible. I’m checking on Hollywood Road more because I’m not sure what portion is in the city limits and which portion is in my district.”

Johnson said the area gets more travel than one might expect.

“There are 15 to 20 families back there,” Johnson told the commissioners. “When the road is blocked by trains on Fannie and Welka Roads, people use that road (Hollywood) as a cut through or short cut to get around.”

Commissioners agreed to take a look at the situation and determine what may be done to help eliminate the issues.
