Thirty years ago in 1991, this area of the state had seen several storms.

A total of six inches fell on the immediate area of Atmore causing problems with flooding on the city. Farms received so much rain that the farmers were worried about their crops.

Local residents were very upset because a man with drug distribution convictions was set free after serving seven months of a 75 year sentence.

Johnny Harris, 45, of St. Clair, was set free by the Alabama Department of Corrections, after being convicted of the murder of Lurell Barrow of Brewton. He served 27 years for the murder in Fountain Correctional Facility.

A production staff for a major movie, “The Last of The Mohicans” was  in town looking for a number of Native Americans to perform as extras in the movie being filmed in Asheville, N.C. They needed some 800 people to be in the movie and wanted to hire those who looked authentic.

Armed Forces Day was coming up and the Civitan Club was to furnish flags to be displayed throughout the city.

Kristen Madison, 10, reached the state tennis tournament.

The body of Vivian Chavers Portwood, 24, was found near the Conecuh County line. The employee of Atmore Community Hospital had been stabbed 20 to 30 times. No arrests had been made, but according to the authorities, there were suspects and the matter was under investigation.

In a feature much like this one, things happening 50 years before were listed, making them 80 years ago in 1941. At that time Atmore High School had its first band concert. At that time the band was only four months old.

Also in 1941 the A&P Grocery had Marvel bread for 9 cents a loaf, lettuce for 6 cents a head and two pounds of Eight O’clock coffee for 27 cents.

Back to 1991, Michele Cox and Tom Gerlach were married on April 20, at First United Methodist Church of Atmore.
