The Escambia County Healthcare Authority announced Aug. 24 that 2,333 cases of COVID-19 have been reported out of its two hospitals.

The latest number is an increase of 180 cases since the Aug. 17 report. The ECHA releases its COVID-19 report every Tuesday.

According to a release, 1,137 cases (plus 31) have been reported out of Atmore Community Hospital, and 1,196 cases (plus 149) from D.W. McMillan Memorial in Brewton since the last update. At ACH, 5,485 have been tested for the virus as of Aug. 24, and 6,470 have been tested at DWM.

ACH Admininstrator Brad Lowery said Aug. 23 that the hospital is seeing a significant rise in patients, specifically related to COVID.

Lowery said the number depends on the day, but roughly 70 percent of the patients they are seeing are COVID related, and almost exclusively unvaccinated.

At present, ACH isn’t holding vaccination clinics, but DWM is, Lower said.

On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration fully-approved the administering of the Pfizer vaccine.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, 5,500 confirmed cases have been reported out of Escambia County.

Eighty-five (plus one) people have died in the county.

Due to the timing of the informatin, the numbers may differ from the numbers on the ADPH’s website.

Confirmed cases are recorded by public health officials in the patient’s county of residence.
