Another Williams Station Day is in the books.

Last Saturday dawned a picture-perfect day for the city’s annual namesake festival on Pensacola Avenue.

More than 70 people participated in Atmore Community Hospital’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K run/walk, and pretty soon afterward, the festivities got going.

Mayor Jim Staff read the proclamation to name the city of Atmore by its namesake for one day; the Boy Scouts helped raise the flag; and a moving rendition of “The National Anthem” was sung.

From the outset, it was evident that there was going to be a lot of people at Williams Station Day.

A steady crowd pulsated back and forth down the street, visiting various vendors who were selling their wares.

By mid morning, Atmore Public Library Director Hope Lassiter was announcing the creative writing contest winners. Additionally, the pumpkin decorating contest winners were crowned as well. There were some creative renditions off of book titles to be seen, that’s for sure.

As the day went along, visitors were entertained by area musicians and even an interesting story about the old railroad was told.

A fun car show was held on Craig Street, not too far from the festival and delicious smells of blooming onions, sausage dogs, funnel cakes and more delights wafted themselves through the air.

When the mid-afternoon times came along, the crowd began to thin as it always does and pretty soon, vendors began tearing down and packing up for the night.

The night afterward, I walked up and down Pensacola Avenue one last time and looked forward to next year’s festival.
