The Atmore City Council this morning adopted a resolution to enter an agreement with the state of Alabama through the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for additional funds for a project on Highway 21.

The resolution, 2022-03, authorizes the city to enter into an agreement with the state and ALDOT covering additional funds awarded during this round of Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II), for the following project:

• intersection improvements on Highway 21 at Poarch Road east, the addition of a right turn land on Highway 21 north, the addition of a left turn lane on Highway 21 south and modifying the existing traffic signal.

According to city officials, the original agreement was passed on May 10, 2021.

Gov. Kay Ivey announced the awarding of the ATRIP-II funding on Jan. 19.

The transportation funding of more than $40 million awarded to projects in almost all 67 counties is made available through ATRIP-II, a program created by the Rebuild Alabama Act. The Rebuild Alabama Act requires ATRIP-II to be an annual program setting aside a minimum of $30 million off the top of ALDOT’s share of new gas tax revenue for projects of local interest on the state highway system.
