The Atmore City Council awarded a construction bid to TripTek Construction LLC for rail spur improvements during its regular meeting on Monday.

Last May, the city was awarded a United States Economic Development Administration grant of $2 million for the completion of a railroad spur in the industrial park that will serve the Coastal Growers LLC peanut shelling facility.

The low bid that was adopted was for $2,558,274.

In other business, the city:

• approved a voting delegate and alternatives for the annual AMIC Membership Meeting. Councilwoman Eunice Johnson was elected as a delegate; and Shawn Lassiter and Chris Harrison as first and second alternates, respectively;

• approved the Alabama First Responders Benefit Program, which provides cancer and disability coverage, and costs the city $3,300 per year;

• approved a Youth Throw Down and Egg Hunt event to be held at Houston Avery Park this Sat., April 16, from 11 am. until 3 p.m.;

• approved the Concerned Citizens of Atmore’s Juneteenth Celebration June 18-19 at Houston Avery Park;

• approved the Mental Health Awareness Walkathon on Sat., May 7, at 9 a.m.; and,

• adopted a proclamation declaring May as Mental Health Month for the city of Atmore.
