18 students inducted in school’s first class

Eighteen Rachel Patterson Elementary Students were inducted into the National STEM Honor Society today.

The NSHS motto is to inspire innovation and recognize student excellence in kindergarten to career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The National STEM Honor Society was founded in response to the growing demand for innovative STEM education, to help fill this gap, providing students from a very young age with opportunities to develop their passion for STEM disciplines, and inspiring them to pursue these subjects as careers and as lifelong interests, according to the NSHS website.

NSTEM chapters are school-based organizations that enrich the educational experience of all student Chapter members.

Those RPES students inducted into the NSHS included Arlaysia Pete, Ayden Lowe, Christian Napoleon, J’Ceon Gable, Jackson Wheeler, Jah’Liyah Dawson, Jehle Pointdexter, Kambrie Hudson, Kaylee Brown, Kayveon Johnson, Khamyria Finklea, Lae’lyn Bogan, LaRoyia Turner, Montez Riley, Paisley Macks, Paxton Young, Syler Fularz and Tro’Darrius McWilliams.

RPES STEM Coach Megan Bibeau said a few requirements for STEM included having a 3.0 grade point average, have good behavior and be a model citizen in the classroom and school.

“You guys have worked hard to get here,” Bibeau said.

Guest Speaker Municipal Judge Kaurean Reynolds applauded the students for their efforts.

He said one of his prized jobs in the community is being a youth advocate.

“Students, this is one of your many accomplishments,” Reynolds said. “To other students, make this your goal, and to take advantage of every opportunity given to you.”

Reynolds said education is a must, and leads to success.

Turner, Dawson, McWilliams and Mack lit the candles of leadership, service, character and scholarship, respectively, before the NSHS pledge, pinning and presentation of certificates was held. Each STEM inductee received a pin, certificate and a tassel.
RPES Principal Toya McMillian echoed congratulations to the STEM inductees, noting that this is the first class to be inducted at the school.
