The second annual Battle of the Badges charity softball game will be held this Sat., June 11, at Tom Byrne Park.

The fundraiser, the brainchild of Atmore Fire Department Lt. Danny White, which pits the AFD (Plug Uglies) against the Atmore Police Department (Road Runners), is held to raise money for The Forgotten Initiative (TFI) of Escambia County, Ala.

White said he didn’t know last year if the softball game was going to turn into an every year thing or not.

“All of the guys wanted to do it this year,” White said. “It looks like it’s going to be an annual thing for the time being.”

White said a lot more local businesses got involved in the effort this year, which helps a lot.

Sponsors of the softball game include: Healthy Minds, Pepsi Bottling Co. of Atmore, Walmart of Atmore, Atmore News/magazine, PCI Printing, Popeyes, The Publican, Johnson Ford, David’s Catfish House, K-9 Kleaners, Mattress Depot, Audio Plus, Weavers Apparel, Landis Design and Emma’s Photography.

Planning for the charity softball game began in March, White said.

White said spectators can expect nine innings of softball during this year’s event.

“Hopefully both teams show up and do well, and I have a little surprise in store that I hope will work out,” he said.

Admission is $5 for adults and kids 12 and under get in free. Concessions will be available.

White said 100 percent of the money raised will go toward the TFI.

Escambia County High School Volunteer Coach Raymond Robinson and City Councilmember Chris Harrison will serve as guest umpires. Zack Stewart and Shane Rollin will be game announcers.

Betty Warren will throw the first pitch.

First pitch for the softball game is at 6 p.m.
