A Montgomery man was arrested July 26 on drug and tampering with evidence charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Byron Jarrett, 32, of Montgomery, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence.

McMann said the arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. on July 26, where an APD narcotics investigator observed four males and a female in a heated argument at a local motel.

“When they noticed the investigator in the area, they got into a vehicle and left the motel,” McMann said. “When the driver of the vehicle noticed the investigator was attempting to follow him he made several turns. The vehicle stopped suddenly and two of the occupants of the vehicle jumped out and the vehicle accelerated away.”
McMann said the investigator was able to conduct a traffic stop, and upon approaching the vehicle, detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
“The investigator discovered several torn plastic baggies on the floorboard with a brown plant like material (spice) on the floorboard also,” he said.

McMann said Jarrett was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
