Escambia Academy named Jerome Webster as its new boys basketball coach July 28.

Webster enters the private school league after coaching stops at Escambia County (15 years), in the Atmore Trouble mentor program and with AAU basketball.

Webster said this opportunity is one where he can get back to coaching boys basketball.

“I’ve been coaching girls basketball the past five or six years,” Webster said. “I got in the mentor league and at some point, people of the community contacted me about coaching at EA. I thought about it, and I talked to a few people and they offered me the job.”

Webster said he feels great about going back to coaching boys, but he knows it’s going to be a change.

“The change only is the level of competition,” he said. “It’ll be a different league with different rules and competition. Overall, the opportunity in itself was one I’m pleased to have. I’m just glad they gave me a chance to coach boys at EA.”

At present, Webster is in the process of meeting his team. He said his expectations are to learn from the players and to get them buying into the program.

“It’s going to be a mix of both leagues (private and public school),” he said. “I’m going to have to adjust the way the league is going to be played in private school versus public school.”

Webster said he’s looking forward to continuing the winning ways at EA.

“The school has a winning program in football, and it tends to tier down,” he said. “The success tends to follow up on track and volleyball, and why not basketball?

“I’m trying to come in there to establish the same tradition as they do in football,” he said.

Webster also serves as a city councilmember for the city of Atmore.
