An Atmore man was arrested Aug. 26 on drug charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said Paul Morris, 43, of Atomre, was arrested and charged with distribution of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMann said the arrest stemmed from an APD officer out on routine patrol and running a license plate on a vehicle in front of him. The officer ran the tag at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 26.

“The tag attached to that vehicle belonged on a different vehicle,” McMann said. “The officer conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver, Paul Morris, 43, of Atmore.”

McMann said as the vehicle was pulling over the officer could see that Morris was allegedly reaching around his seat and into the back seat. The officer was given consent to search the vehicle, he said.

“During the search of the vehicle a digital scale was found in the in the backseat floorboard,” McMann said. “A container in the center console containing a clear crystal-like substance was found that field tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed approximately 14.9 grams.”

Morris was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
