WSN tops Flomaton 13-12 in region play [with photo gallery]

W.S. Neal’s Lakietric Barnes scored on an onside kick midway through the fourth quarter and the Blue Eagles held on to beat Flomaton 13-12 in region action tonight at FHS.

Barnes’ eventual game-winning score came with WSN trailing 12-7 in a game where the only points came in the final 24 minutes.

Both teams battled each other throughout the night, getting big stops deep the red zone and making some plays on offense.

The first score of the night came early in the third quarter.

Flomaton recovered an onside kick to start the half, and a short time later, Leonte Wright took it 6 yards with 9:33 to go in the third. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.

The Blue Eagles then drove the field, but the Hurricanes stepped up on defense, stopping a drive near the 3-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, WSN got on the board with a 11-yard touchdown rush from Carter Hodges to make it 7-6 with the extra point try.

The Hurricanes then answered the score on a 14-yard rush from Wright with 7:26 left. The 2-point conversion failed, but FHS led 12-7.

Then, Barnes took the onside kick some 65 yards to the house, and the Blue Eagles’ defense stepped up, recovering a stripped fumble with 6:55 left.

WSN drove the ball, and FHS got it back with 13.5 seconds left for one last try.

With the loss, FHS falls to 1-6 overall, and 0-5 in Class 3A, Region 1.

WSN improves to 6-1, and 5-0.

FHS visits Mobile Christian while WSN hosts Thomasville next week.
