Sheriff Heath Jackson said the incident occurred around noon and the student was in a classroom.

Jackson said deputies responded to the school on the report there might have been a student there that was armed.

Jackson said deputies checked the student, and the student was in possession of a semi-automatic handgun that was loaded.

Jackson said the student was transported to a juvenile detention facility.

ECMS officials said all students were safe, and the school resumed a normal school day.
