Ernest Ward Middle School and Escambia Academy held their annual Veterans Day Program Nov. 10.

At EWMS, Principal Nancy Perry challenged students to do one thing when they encounter veterans – stick out your hand, and thank them for their service and sacrifice.

Perry encouraged the students during the school’s annual Veterans Day program on Thursday.

Perry welcomed those in attendance, including Escambia County (Fla.) District School officials, area veterans, family members and guests. Northview High School’s J.R.O.T.C. Color Guard then presented the presentation of colors.

After a prayer was said by the school’s drama club, “America the Beautiful” was performed by Cameron Gordon and the band.

EWMS Teacher Stephen Dillard (U.S. Navy, retired) served as the guest speaker.

Dillard spoke about the importance of Veterans Day.

“It’s a day to honor you, and to celebrate you,” Dillard said, looking at the gathered veterans. “Without you, there would be no United States of America.”

Dillard said the observance is a reflection of how proud the school and its community are of the veterans.

Dillard said some 4.7 million veterans live in rural areas in the country, and some receive benefits from the VA.

Then, the Armed Forces Medley was played, “Fighting Falcon March” was performed by the middle school band, the POW Missing in Action Table was recognized, a presentation of wreaths to veterans, the drama club performed “Some Gave All” by Billy Ray Cyrus, the memory table was read and Kerry Harper performed “God Bless the USA.” Earlier in the program, Hudson Brown sang “The National Anthem”.

During EA’s program, Carl Sellers sang “The National Anthem,” the 13 folds reading was done by Bella Handley, Danny Doerr and Courtney Richardson folded the flag and Michael Parker of the VFW was the guest speaker.

Poarcha Bailey read the memory table, Tiffany Gookin held a prayer for the nation and moment of silence and an armed forces salute service song medley was played.
